La Pakis

In the face of a growing wave of anti-gay legislation, Oscar Garcia, one of the first LGBTQ+ Latinx activists in the American South, decides to bring back La Pakis, a powerful, but destructive drag persona from his troubled past, in an attempt to integrate her into a positive community role model.

PAST FILMS

¡FIESTA! Quinceañera

Life for a Latinx immigrant family in the New South can be challenging and sometimes terrifying, but thankfully, there’s always a fiesta to take you through the night. ¡Fiesta! Quinceañera is a feature documentary broadcast on REEL SOUTH, based on the ITVS digital series, that weaves the lives of three Latina girls and a seasoned drag artist as they celebrate their quinceañera, a complex and colorful rite of passage.

This Taco Truck Kills Fascists

New Orleans-based performance activist José Torres-Tama has a dream to create a revolutionary Taco Truck Theater with a simple message of “no guacamole for immigrant haters”. This Taco Truck Kills Fascists weaves two narratives: the classic “against all odds” story of an immigrant artist of color bringing the voices of radical Black performers and undocumented workers out of the shadows with the story of a father struggling to raise his two boys into political consciousness in the “Age of Trump”. Winner of the Jury Award for Best Louisiana Feature at the New Orleans Film Festival.

OTHER PROJECTS

Aside from its film projects, Nuevo South provides a space for youth, with a focus on the Latinx community, to develop video and photography skills. When possible, we hire young professionals to assist with our film productions and offer opportunities of mentorship.

We are also an incubator of entrepreneurship for young Latinx storytellers through our program that teaches skills focused on event and commercial video and photography. There is a great demand in the Latinx community for videographers and photographers to record their many quinceañeras, weddings, and other events, and to create marketing content for their businesses. This project is mutually beneficial by offering the community affordable and culturally sensitive media services, while giving young professionals the opportunity to earn a good income and gain valuable experience.
